Connecting through purpose

How shared meaning deepens our happiness

Relationships are central to happiness. But what kind of relationships matter most? Belonging to a group because of who we are or what we do — our job, neighbourhood, or background — can give us comfort and identity. But belonging because of what we care about — a shared value, goal, or passion — tends to foster deeper connection.

That’s the difference between identity-based and purpose-based connection. Identity-based communities gather around circumstance or label: being a parent, a local resident, or part of a sports group. These bonds can be grounding, but often stay on the surface. Purpose-based communities form around action or belief — people creating something, learning something or contributing to something larger than themselves.

When we engage in shared purpose, we naturally bring more curiosity, creativity, and energy. That energy draws others in and can often blossom into long-lasting, nourishing bonds between people who are moving towards the same goal.

Here are a few ways to attract more purpose-based connection into your life.

  • Reflect on what lights you up. What do you love to learn, build, or contribute to? This helps you pinpoint the things that give life meaning day-to-day.

  • Look for communities built around that spark. It could be a volunteer group, hobby club, advocacy project, or online space.

  • Wear your enthusiasm on your sleeve. When you show up with energy and enthusiasm, you invite others to do the same.

Keep up your identity-based connection, too — identity-based groups meet important emotional needs. Both are important for belonging and wellbeing.
