Health check anxiety is real

How to handle the waiting part without spiralling

Waiting for health results can feel harder than the appointment itself. Here are some tips to help you through this challenging waiting period.

Acknowledge your feelings

It’s normal to feel anxious — and simply acknowledging, “I’m anxious right now”, can actually help to take the edge off. But try to feel your feelings without seeing them as a problem to solve. You’re allowed to feel the way you feel.

Ask for help managing expectations

A lot of the stress comes from not knowing when or how you will receive results. Ask your doctor to detail how and when to expect communication, so that you know exactly what to expect and your imagination isn’t left to wander.

Dial up your self-care

This is one of those times to lean into whatever feels comforting and steadying. That might look like rewatching a familiar show, eating meals you love, getting outside, or keeping your routine simple and predictable.

You can’t always speed up the results, but you can soften the experience of waiting. Acknowledge what you’re feeling, reduce the unknowns where you can, and give yourself a little extra care in the meantime.
