How to empower by example
We’re all leaders in at least one area of our lives. Managing a team, raising kids, caring for friends and family — it all counts.
So what does it really mean to lead by example? How can you be a great leader, whether you’re ‘bossing’ in a corporate setting or in your local community?
Research supports the idea that you need to practice what you preach. People are more likely to follow in your footsteps when they see you living your values, not just talking about them.
Take the first step. Say the hard thing. When you model vulnerability, it shows others it’s safe to do so, too.
People appreciate understanding where you’re coming from. A quick “here’s why I did that” builds trust.
You don’t have to run the show the whole time. Step back (where appropriate) and give others the space to lead, stumble, and learn.
Take breaks, set boundaries, and speak kindly to yourself. It shows others they can do the same.
No one gets it right all the time. Saying “I missed the mark” goes a long way, and keeps things real.
Follow through, always. Being reliable builds trust way faster than big, bold words ever will.
The way you show up has a quiet influence that spreads further than you think. You don’t have to be perfect. Just keep walking the talk — the impact adds up.
