How to set up a motivating work environment
It’s easy to take the average office space for granted and not give much thought to the layout or decor — if you spare any thoughts for it at all. But how your workspace is set up can have a tangible impact on your motivation levels.
Research shows that natural light, plants, and comfortable seating can lift energy levels and spark creativity. The opposite is true, too: bad lighting and clutter can be motivation-drainers.
Wherever your workplace — whether you work in an office, on the road, in the home — it’s worth thinking about how you can add a few personal touches to make your space more motivating.
Here are some ideas:
Let in the light. Position your desk near a window if you can.
Bring the outdoors in. A plant or two is nice to look at, and — bonus! — studies show greenery boosts mood and focus.
Declutter your zone. Even clearing one surface can create a sense of calm and control.
Create a ‘motivation anchor’. This could be a photo, a quote, or even a playlist. Whatever the object, its purpose should be to remind you why you do the work you do.
Respect your rhythms. If possible, set up your space to support your energy levels. For example, a standing desk for when you feel most alert, a cozy chair for when you need to reflect or do light admin.
You don’t need a complete office makeover to feel the difference. A few thoughtful tweaks can help. What small change could you make to your workspace this week?
