Nature, everywhere

Finding nature wherever you are

When you think about spending time in nature, do you often picture somewhere far away and remote — like a nature reserve, secluded beach or quiet forest? These places can be lovely to visit, but they’re not the only way to reap the benefits of the great outdoors.

The mental health benefits of nature don’t depend on wilderness or wide-open spaces. What matters is being in contact with living systems. Natural light, air, movement, texture and sound all send calming signals to the nervous system — and these can all be found close to home.

A nature treasure hunt

How many of these can you spot in your local environment?

  • Street trees or garden plants

  • Leaves, flowers or seed pods

  • Birds, insects or spiders

  • Pets or other urban animals

  • Soil, mud or grass

  • Sunlight

  • Wind, rain or cloud movement

  • A park, reserve or shared green space

  • Indoor plants

  • Fresh air through an open window

What else can you notice and add to your list?
