Proof of progress

Why seeing your habits matters

When you’re in the early stages of sticking to a new habit, progress often feels invisible. Habit tracking can help. By recording the small things you do each day, you start to build evidence — proof that effort adds up, even when you still feel a long way away from your end goal.

Habit tracking also helps you refine your strategy. You’ll start to notice patterns and can adjust your behaviour to suit. For example, you might notice you’re more consistent when you start early, that you stall when you’re tired, or that things in your environment are getting in the way of your success.

If you’re new to habit tracking, here are a few ways to get started.

  • Start tiny. Pick one habit to track.

  • Know thyself. Use whatever format works for you — the best tracker is one you’ll actually check.

  • Track visibly. Keep your tracker where you’ll see it. Seeing your streak helps fuel motivation.

  • Reflect without judgement. Once a week, look back and notice patterns. When did it feel easy? When did it feel hard? Use that insight to adjust, not criticise.

  • Reward consistency. Celebrate showing up, not just results.

Once you get into the swing of habit tracking with one small habit, you can build on your success.
