Why resilience is a superpower in uncertain times
Change is part of life, but when it comes fast or hits us unexpectedly, it can shake our sense of balance.
The good news is, there’s a skill that can help: resilience.
Resilience is the ability to bounce back from setbacks or stress. It helps us adapt, stay calm, and keep perspective.
Resilience isn’t about being tough all the time or never feeling overwhelmed. It’s about how we respond to challenges — how we manage our emotions, shift our perspective, and find ways to cope. People who are resilient tend to see change as a chance to learn and grow, rather than just something to fear.
Connection. Having people you trust to talk to or lean on reminds you that you’re not alone, and sharing your experience helps reduce stress.
Comfort routines. Routines act like mental anchors. When everything else feels uncertain, familiar habits provide predictability and control.
Mindfulness. Change can trigger overwhelming thoughts about the future or ‘what-ifs’. Mindfulness practices, like deep breathing or focusing on your senses, helps interrupt ruminations by grounding you in the present moment.
Focusing on what you can control. By narrowing your focus to things you can influence, you reclaim a sense of agency.
Self-compassion. When things get tough, be kind to yourself. It’s OK to feel frustrated or anxious. Treat yourself like you would a close friend.
Resilience is a muscle we can all develop and strengthen. It’s a learned skill, not a fixed trait. Each time you face a challenge and find a way through it, you’re exercising that resilience muscle — making it easier to handle the next hurdle.
