The need to make a difference

Why feeling impactful matters

We all want to feel like we matter. There’s a deep human need to know we’re making a difference.

According to Self-Determination theory, feeling impactful taps into three core psychological needs: autonomy (I chose this), competence (I’m good at this), and relatedness (it matters to others).

When these needs are met, we’re more energised, fulfilled, and more likely to keep showing up with purpose.

But here’s the catch: impact feels good, until it doesn’t. Research shows that when we tie our sense of worth to external outcomes (like KPIs or being seen as productive), we risk burnout and dissatisfaction.

You could be making a huge difference and still feel empty if the work you’re doing isn’t aligned with your values. This is known as the “unhappy productive worker” phenomenon.

How to make an impact (without losing yourself)

This can be a tricky tightrope to walk, but here are some tips to help you find your balance.

  • Focus on who you’re helping, not just on what you’re achieving

  • Make space for creativity, as this can help boost intrinsic motivation

  • Build in recovery time — rest is fuel

  • Remind yourself why you chose this path

  • Celebrate invisible wins

A meaningful impact starts from within

We live in a world that rewards output. But the kind of impact that fuels wellbeing comes from alignment with your own values, not overachievement. You don’t need to be everything to everyone to make an impact: you need to tune into what feels right for you.
