The power of psychological safety

Why feeling safe at work sparks innovation

Psychological safety is more than the right thing to do — it’s the foundation of innovation.

When team members feel safe to speak up, share ideas, and take risks without fear of judgement, creativity thrives. According to Forbes, organisations that foster psychological safety lay the groundwork for a culture rich in creativity and innovation.

You don’t need to be a leader to cultivate psychological safety in your work environment (although leaders do play an outsized role). Everyone can take steps to contribute to a more psychologically safe workplace.

1. Share your ideas, no matter how small

Innovation begins with the courage to speak up. Share your thoughts, even if they’re just a spark. When others see you doing this, it creates a ripple effect that encourages openness across the team.

2. Embrace vulnerability

When you’re open about what you don’t know or when you make a mistake, it encourages others to do the same, creating a culture of learning and growth, not fear.

3. Support your colleagues’ ideas

Avoid critiquing others’ ideas — build on them, instead. Supporting and encouraging others’ creativity, even in its early, unpolished form, promotes a sense of safety and trust within your team.

4. Be an active listener

Create space for others to express themselves without interruption. Sometimes the most innovative ideas come from being fully present and listening to the perspectives of others.

5. Celebrate small wins

When everyone feels appreciated for their efforts, no matter the size, it reinforces a safe environment for idea generation.
