How to hone your soft skills in the workplace
In the age of AI, soft skills are more important than ever before. With machines quickly learning how to do many technical jobs, soft skills are a strength that can set you apart.
Soft skills are the interpersonal, emotional and thinking skills that shape how you work with others and approach problems. They include things like communication, empathy, adaptability, critical thinking, collaboration and self-awareness. Unlike technical skills, they’re harder to automate — and harder to teach quickly.
Start with awareness
Pay attention to how you show up in everyday moments — meetings, emails, feedback conversations. Notice when things flow easily, and when they don’t. Self-awareness is the foundation for almost every soft skill.
Practice active listening
That means listening to understand, not just to reply. Put distractions away, ask clarifying questions, and reflect back what you’ve heard. People feel valued when they feel heard, and trust builds quickly from there.
Get comfortable with feedback
Seek it out, receive it without defensiveness, and use it as data rather than judgement. Feedback is a fast-track to progress.
Stretch your thinking
Take on tasks that require problem-solving, collaboration or decision-making outside your comfort zone. Putting yourself in this environment will encourage you to practice your soft skills out of necessity.
Finally, reflect regularly
A few minutes after a meeting or project to ask “What worked?” and “What could I do differently next time?” goes a long way.
