Why grit alone won’t get you there
Did you know that willpower is limited?
It drains over time, especially when you’re tired, stressed, or surrounded by temptation.
Many of us think we need more willpower, when what we really need is to spend our willpower carefully like the precious resource it is.
Your environment does most of the heavy lifting. The food in your fridge, the people around you, the notifications on your phone — all of these quietly shape your behaviour. By adjusting your surroundings, you can make your willpower stretch further.
Simple ‘hacks’ like hiding the addictive apps on your phone, keeping the fridge stocked with nourishing snacks, and laying out your work clothes the night before can help set your environment up for success. Keep the things that help you close and visible, and the things that derail you out of sight and reach.
By giving yourself structure, you no longer need to rely on willpower alone — helping you save your willpower for those moments and tasks that really matter.
You’re not broken, lazy, or ‘less than’ for running out of willpower. You’re human.
