What does success mean to you?

Rethinking success through a wellbeing lens

Success is often defined by major accomplishments — promotions, graduations, or financial gains. A quick search of ‘success’ on Unsplash (a free image platform) shows images of mountaineers, office workers, and graduates. But success is about more than what . It’s also about how you feel.

Take a moment to ponder this question: Does your definition of success align with your wellbeing, or come at the expense of it?

If it’s the latter, it might be time to evaluate what success means to you.

Success rooted in wellbeing allows you to prioritise your physical, mental, and emotional health alongside your achievements. It’s about your overall sense of contentment.

A useful exercise is to map success to each of our 6 Pillars of Wellbeing. What does success look like for you in each of these areas?

  • Chill: Calm the body and mind.

  • Do: Keep learning. Get creative.

  • Connect: Build relationships. Boost connection.

  • Celebrate: Find gratitude. Live your values.

  • Move: Stay active. Feel energised.

  • Enjoy: Practice self-care. Focus on fun.

Defining success by the 6 Pillars of Wellbeing can help you cultivate a better quality of life.

Big, difficult milestones are still a wonderful part of success. But try not to forget the smaller building blocks of a successful life, too, like getting plenty of rest, spending quality time with loved ones, and having fun.
