When you feel unseen

What to do when it feels like no one “gets it”

If you’ve been feeling like no one really “gets it” lately — you’re not alone. (Even though it probably feels that way.) We get the irony.

Feeling unseen, unheard, or disconnected is incredibly common right now. We’re living in a time where loneliness is high, even for people who look socially “fine” on the outside.

That’s because loneliness isn’t really about being alone. It’s about feeling unmet — like there isn’t a place where you can fully land or be understood.

What can help

Lower the bar (just for now)

You’re not giving up on deep connection — you’re making it easier to access some connection. A quick message, a short chat, a small interaction all count.

Look for safe, not perfect

Not everyone will fully understand your experience. But who feels safe, kind, or easy to be around? Connection builds from there — not from perfect alignment.

Create a moment instead of waiting for one

Send the message. Suggest the coffee. Share the thought. Waiting for connection can keep you stuck. Creating it, even in small ways, shifts things.

Notice what already counts

Pay close attention every time someone does show up for you, no matter how small the gesture. In today’s busy world, a message or check-in can be easy to dismiss, but they matter. Let them register.

Be on your own side

When you feel misunderstood, it can be tempting to turn that frustration inward. Try meeting yourself with a bit more patience and self-kindness. Notice your feelings without judging them and talk to yourself as you would a friend.

Reach out for support

If loneliness is starting to feel overwhelming, it’s okay to ask for support. Reaching out to someone you trust or speaking with a counsellor can help you feel heard in a way that’s hard to create on your own. You don’t need to figure it all out before you reach out.

Remember, this feeling is common, but it won’t stay this way forever. Bit by bit, connection can build again.
